Attendance and Punctuality

Getting to class on time, and avoiding absences are critical if your child is to get the most out of school. Establishing routines for the morning are extremely important so that your children arrive on time.

Supervision begins at 8:45 a.m.  Please ensure your children are dropped off between 8:45 and 9:00.

Entry is 9:00 a.m.

We really want to see all of our students arriving on time for school each morning.

What can you, as a parent, do to help ensure your child’s regular attendance?

The morning can be a very hectic time. Here are some effective tips for getting your child up and out the door on time:

 • Get your child to bed at a reasonable hour.

 • Set realistic and consistent schedules and rules at home. Getting ready for school should be part of the child’s overall routine; something that’s expected of him/her every day.

 • Do whatever is necessary the night before to save time in the morning, such as setting out clothes, packing lunches, and setting backpacks at the door.

 • Create a set morning routine that your child can easily follow (i.e. washing hands and face, going to the bathroom, dressing, making the bed, brushing teeth, and eating a healthy breakfast).

 • Avoid any distractions that can slow your child down, like TV, computers or games.

 • Set your alarm to get up earlier if you’re running late regularly.

It is also very important to call in to the school to inform the office if your child is going to be absent.  The office will make every attempt to reach parents if a child is absent.

According to our Safe Arrival Policy #665.0

Parent(s)/guardian(s) shall:
 • provide the school with complete and current emergency contact information during the first week of September and throughout the school year if information changes; and
• inform the school of all absences, late arrivals and/or changes to departure plans of their child as soon as possible.

Here are some tips to help you get your child to school on time:

Extreme Weather Conditions–Winter

Dressing for Winter Weather
During the cold winter months it is important that students come to school dressed for the weather conditions. This includes:

boots,
hats,
scarves,
snow pants,
warm coats
and mittens or gloves

We also encourage packing an extra pair of socks and pants in case they get wet.
All students are expected to go out for every recess and lunch hour, weather permitting. We monitor the weather throughout the day, including temperature, wind chill, sun/cloud conditions and wind velocity. In extreme weather conditions, such as ice pellets or extremely high wind chill factors, the principal may decide to shorten recess breaks or keep students indoors.
Students with illnesses serious enough to prevent them from participating in recess or other outdoor activities should stay at home until their condition improves. This will also prevent the spread of illness to others.

Winter Bazaar Success

Our First Winter Bazaar was a fantastic success. We had a wonderful turnout from our community and everyone had fun.

Many of our students had a great time at the Henna station.  There were many cool designs to pick from.

Henna

We had many vendors from our community participate in our Winter Bazaar and we would like to thank them for supporting this initiative and for supporting the students at JVPS.

Of course, where would we be without our fabulous Mrs. Papi.  Here she is helping to sell tickets at the entrance to our Winter Bazaar!!!

Santa and his helper were very popular at our Winter Bazaar.  Many students had their pictures taken with Santa and they also had a chance to write a letter to Santa.  I wonder what Santa will write back?

We also want to thank the organizers of the terrific event, our School Council Members who put so much hard work and dedication into making this event the success it was.  Here are some of the parents and Mrs. Papi who helped to create a very memorable evening.

Holiday Basket Donation Reminder

Kindergarten Registration to Commence January 19, 2018

Kindergarten registration will commence on January 19, 2018 for the 2018-19 school year. Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Children who turn four or five years old during 2018, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten. A kindergarten information session for parents is being planned for this spring. For more information please visit the YRDSB website or contact your local school.

As well please see the link below for full information on how to register:

French Immersion registration will take place from January 19 - February 9, 2018

Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at French Immersion schools on January 18, 2018 at 7 p.m. FI registration will begin January 19, 2018. In order to streamline the registration process, parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2018, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call their home school office (where your child currently attends) and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address to your designated French Immersion school to register between January 19 and February 9, 2018. This eliminates the need to provide duplicate enrolment information or to pre-register.
Families registering students who do not currently attend a YRDSB school will need to complete full registration paperwork at their designated FI school. Information required for registration includes:
  • Proof of child’s age (Birth Certificate/Passport)
  • Any legal documents related to custody arrangements if applicable
  • Proof of Residency of the student - two documents, one from each of the categories below showing the home address;
    • Category A - notice of tax assessment, current rental/lease agreement, agreement to purchase including proof of purchase provided before the pupil attends the school, or property tax bill, and
    • Category B - utility bill, bank statement or other official document.
YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.

Elementary Progress Report Card

Students will receive one Progress Report in November and two Provincial Report Cards, one in February and one in June.

The progress report for 2017 will be sent home to parents on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.

The purpose of the Elementary Progress Report is to provide information about how a student is progressing at this point in time.

As learning skills and work habits play a critical role in a student’s success, there is emphasis in this first report on these skills. A student’s development of these skills and habits is also a strong indication of how a student is developing as a self-directed learner. The Learning Skills (with an example) are:

·                Responsibility - completes and submits class work, homework and assignments according to agreed-                upon timelines
·                Organization - establishes priorities and manages time to complete tasks and achieve goals.
·                Independent Work - follows instructions with minimal supervision.
·                Collaboration - accepts various roles and an equitable share of work in a group. Initiative - approaches
new tasks with  a positive attitude
·                Initiative - Demonstrates the caapcity for innovation and a willingness to take risks.
·                Self-Regulation - perseveres and makes an effort when responding to challenges.

Our teachers are working with students on  these Learning Skills and providing them with opportunities for self-assessment.

The Elementary Progress Report Card will go home on Wednesday November 22, 2017.

Please sit with your child to review the Learning skills and help your child to make a goal for him/herself for the next term.

Year 2 Kindergarten families will be invited to attend Parent-Teacher Interviews and/or Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences.

Parent/teacher/student interviews will be held during Nov. 23 (evening) and Nov. 24 PA day, aligned with the elementary Progress Reporting process.

The primary purpose of assessment is to improve learning and to help children become self-regulating, autonomous learners.

Educators engage in assessment for learning as they observe and document evidence of children’s learning (through the process of “pedagogical documentation”) and provide descriptive feedback to the children that is designed to help them move forward within their zone of proximal development.

In Kindergarten, evaluation is the summarizing of evidence of a child’s learning in relation to the overall expectations at a given point in time, in order to specify a child’s key learning, growth in learning, and next steps in learning.

The Kindergarten Communication of Learning: Initial Observations is intended to provide parents with an overview of initial observations of their child’s learning and early evidence of growth in learning in relation to the overall expectations in The Kindergarten Program and with information about appropriate next steps to further the child’s learning

We look forward to seeing our parents at the parent-teacher interviews.
