Earth Day at JVPS

On Friday we had a wonderful assembly where our whole school learned about Earth Day.  The students sang songs and watched a powerful video on why Earth Day is important.

Then we all went out to have a spring clean up of our school yard.

Below are some thoughts that our students have expressed about how they can help the earth.  Our Earth Day Tree is currently in our front foyer.

Genius Hour at JVPS

Our grade 6/7 Class at Johnsview Village P.S. is

participating in, "Genius Hour", where students pursue a

topic of special interest.  This supports the Board's goal of

Modern Learning.  To gain a deeper understanding of what

Genius Hour is comprised of, please watch the video

enclosed with this blog.  The learning goal below, helps

students to articulate their learning and the success criteria

which is co-constructed with the students, provides the

students with a road map of how to complete the task.

Learning Goal:

We are learning to apply a variety of skills as we each pursue a topic of our own interest.

Success Criteria

We will know we are successful when we:

Formulate questions that are open-ended and related to our personal interests
Gather information to support our ideas
Sort and classify information in ways that allow us to view the information from different perspectives and make connections between ideas
Make judgments and draw conclusions about ideas in texts and cite evidence from the text to support our views
Extend our understanding of tasks by connecting, comparing, and contrasting the ideas in them to our own knowledge, to other texts and to the world around us
Determine whether the ideas and information we have gathered are adequate and do more research if necessary
Make revisions to improve the content, clarity, and interest of our presentation
Communicate orally in a clear, coherent manner, using appropriate organizing strategies to link ideas and information
Use a variety of appropriate visual aids to support our presentation

Day of Pink at Johnsview

We would like to thank all the students who wore pink on Wednesday April 13 for the International Day of Pink.

This day is when communities around the work unite to celebrate diversity and raise awareness about the need to stop discrimination and all forms of bullying.

The students at Johnsview participated in a wonderful assembly where they listened to a read aloud of the book, "Stop Picking on Me" by Pat Thomas.

In addition to the read aloud, the students watched  two skits about bullying and then a member of the audience was asked to join the skit and help resolve the problem.

During the day, the students also wrote on small pink T-shirts to describe how they would help others.  We clipped their thoughts on the T-Shirts to our large tree and you can see the tree in our front foyer. Here are some pictures.

Character Trait of the Month - Perseverance

What are some ways our students can demonstrate perseverance?

  • When you are near the end of a race and are struggling to finish, find a burst of energy to cross the finish line
  • Try an new sport or skill that is difficult and don't quit
  • Study and work hard to improve your grades
  • Help a younger child learn to ride a bicycle or play a new game
  • Spend hours practicing to play a musical instrument
  • Always finish what you start. Do not give up when things get tough
  • Try something again, even if you failed the first time. Remember you had to learn to walk before you could run

Parent Engagement Survey

Thank you to all of the parents to date who have completed the parent engagement survey found on the blog.  To date we have 59 responses and we would be very pleased to have all parents respond to the survey.  If you are able, the survey is still open for parents who have yet to fill it out.  We would welcome your input as the results from the survey will guide our next steps. Please make sure you are only filling out the survey once.

So far, parents have indicated the following information:

  • Parents would be interested in coming to the school for a workshop on the education system
  • Parent would be interested in a workshop at the end of the school day
  • Parents would be interested in coming to the school for a family science night
  • Parents are interested in a paid lunch program with most parents choosing  "art" for the paid lunch program

Ontario Dedicating $60 Million for Renewed Math Strategy

At Johnsview Village P.S. we have a strong focus on math.  For example:
  • We currently have 60 minutes dedicated to a math block and that will continue for next year
  • Our upcoming PA Day on May 6 will have a math focus
  • Our school is currently partnering with two other schools to focus on math
  • We are looking at a Parent Engagement evening next year with a math focus
  • We will be instituting two numeracy coaches for September

Province Helping More Students Achieve Excellence in Numeracy

Ontario is dedicating more than $60 million to help support students across the province achieve better results in mathematics.
Math is a critical requirement for the jobs of today and tomorrow. Starting next September, key elements of the renewed strategy will be introduced including:
  • A minimum of 60 minutes each day of protected learning time for effective mathematics instruction and assessment for students in Grades 1 to 8
  • Up to three math lead teachers in all elementary schools
  • Coaching for principals of select secondary schools to lead improvement in math among their students
  • Support for learning at home through parent resources that provide helpful tips and information on the mathematics curriculum
  • Better access to online math resources and math supports such as Homework Help or SOS Devoirs
  • Math support for Grades 6 to 9 outside of the school day
  • Opportunities for educators to deepen their knowledge in math learning, teaching and leading, including a dedicated math Professional Development Day to further their school improvement efforts.
The renewed math strategy is informed by research and lessons learned from the education sector. It focuses on the needs of students, their families, educators, schools and district school boards and encourages a shared responsibility to support student learning. The strategy also supports Ontario's renewed vision for education with its focus on achieving excellence in math.
Helping students achieve success in mathematics is part of the government's economic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes investing in talent and skills, including helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. The plan is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history and investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. The plan is also helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement.

QUOTES

" While Ontarios math results are quite good compared to other jurisdictions, we know that we have more to do. Our renewed math strategy takes the latest research and what weve learned from our successful journey to improve literacy, and applies it to improve math outcomes."
- Liz Sandals
Minister of Education

QUICK FACTS

  • As part of the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment, Ontario students performed at the Canadian average and above the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average in mathematics, reading and science.

Character Trait Perseverance

This month's Character Assembly was held on Thursday, March 31 and it was hosted by Mrs. Kingston's grade 1/2 class.  The students in her class explained what the character trait of perseverance is and ways to demonstrate perseverance.

Children who will be consistently demonstrating this trait this month, will be honoured with a character award at our next Character Trait Assembly.

We are all reminded of the importance of developing positive character traits in our children and always modelling how we hope that they will interact with others.

Here is what the students shared with us at the assembly about defining perseverance:

  • Stay with the task and do not give up
  • Show commitment, pride and a positive attitude in completing tasks
  • Try again and again and again
  • Be patient and be willing to work hard

You can encourage your children to persevere and discuss with them ways that they can demonstrate perseverance at school and in their learning.

Junior Boys' Basketball News

On Thursday, March 31, 2016 the Jr. Boys' Basketball Team traveled to Woodland P.S. to participate in a tournament.

The boys played their first game against Woodland.  They played great defense and they won the game 25-19.  In the second game, the boys faced off against German Mills.   Their communication was much better and again their defense carried them to an easy victory of 24-5.  The boys exemplified great team work, hard work, and supported each other all afternoon.

A special thank you goes out to all of the parent volunteers who helped out by transporting the student athletes to the game, as well as all the family members who came out to watch.  Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Mr. Bainerman                            Go Jaguars!!!!!!
