#EQAO Facts Social Media Campaign

Message from EQAO...

                          #EQAOFacts Social Media Campaign

Throughout this year’s provincial assessment period, EQAO will be using social media to help all of its stakeholders better understand how EQAO assesses student achievement of Ontario Curriculum learning expectations. Over a period of three weeks, we will be profiling questions from past years’ tests, showing the link to the curriculum expectation and providing information about how students performed on the particular question.

We invite you to follow this campaign and to share it with your own social media communities.

The Week Ahead May 30 to June 3

School Musical

Thank you to all of our families who were able to join us for our school musical.  The musical was a huge success and the feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive and everyone enjoyed the show.

We would like to thank our staff for their time and devotion for organizing and producing the play for our students and our community.

Education in the arts is essential to students' intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth and well-being.  Experiences in the arts play a valuable role in helping students to achieve their potential as learners and to participate fully in their community and in society as a whole.

The arts provide a natural vehicle through which students can explore and express themselves and through which they can discover and interpret the world around them.

Participation in the arts contributes in important ways to students' lives and learning such as:

  • it involves intense engagement
  • develops motivation and confidence
  • fosters the use of creative and dynamic ways of thinking and knowing.

It is well documented that the intellectual and emotional development of children is enhanced through the study of the arts. Through the study of dance, drama, music and visual arts students develop the ability to think creatively and critically.  The arts nourish and stimulate the imagination and provide students with an expanded range of tools, techniques and skills to help them gain insights into the world around them and to represent their understanding in various ways.  Study of the arts also provides opportunities for differentiation of both instruction and learning environments.

Again, we want to thank our staff for enhancing the learning opportunities through the school musical at Johnsview.

EQAO Provincial Assessment

Good luck to our Grade 6 and Grade 3 students who will be writing the EQAO provincial assessment during the next two weeks. We know our students will do their best to demonstrate their learning of our the curriculum expectations.

Between May 25th - June 1st,
students in Grade 3 and Grade 6 will participate in the Education Quality Accountability of Ontario province-wide testing, known as EQAO.  These tests are administered to all students in Ontario and provide the Ministry of Education and the public with critical information about how children are performing in Language Arts and Mathematics curriculum. The data from these tests help our school move forward with our school improvement initiatives. Each year we use the results of these curriculum based assessments to make adjustments to our programs in order to better meet the needs of our students.

You can support your children and the process by avoiding

appointments and absences during these times, ensuring

that your children arrive on time to school each morning,

ensuring that your children are well rested and by providing

Are You Moving?

Spring is a busy time of year for our school. EQAO, field trips, graduation and Welcome to Kindergarten plus other activities are all on the horizon, but we also begin planning for the next school year. As we begin to organize for September, it is important that we have the most up to date information from all of our families. Please help us!

If you are moving to an address out of our school boundaries and you know your child is not going to be returning to Johnsview Village Public School for the 2016-2017 school year (except grade eight students graduating to high school), please inform the school in writing as soon as possible.

Visit to Thornlea Secondary School

On Thursday May 5, the grade 6 and 7 students had the opportunity to visit Thornlea Secondary School. The students walked over to the school and had a tour of the building.

Walking to Thornlea Secondary School

Tour of the School

After the tour the students participated in a writers' workshop where they worked with grade 12 students on discussing favourite books and what good writers do.

Writers' Workshop

The students had a great time and these are some of our students' thoughts and reflections after the visit:
  • getting to see what a high school really looks like was very helpful
  • getting to know some high school students would help us have friends
  • get to really know how to work on cars was very interesting
  • working with the professional lighting was helpful for us now as we explore the new green screen our school has purchased for movie making
  • music room with all the instruments made us enthusiastic and interested in playing instruments for next year
  • art classes and examples of beautiful artwork and sculptures was something we were very interested in
  • gym was huge and the bleachers looked cool
  • mixed learning spaces with emphasis on digital literacy was very motivating
  • jokes the teachers made, helped us to feel comfortable so high school won't be so scary
  • cosmetology room, looked like a real spa and performed make up artistry for real events
  • inciting conversation about possible careers and how to prepare for them
Thank you to the staff at Thornlea S.S.and Johnsview Village P.S. for organizing this opportunity and we look forward to many more ways to collaborate with our feeder high school.

The Week Ahead May 9 to 13

Junior Boys' Basketball

Yesterday the Junior Boys Basketball Team went to the York Regional Basketball Tournament.  Twelve of the top teams in the region were there to compete for the championship.  The competition was fierce and the boys rose to the challenge.

They went 1-1 in the round robin by playing great team defence.  Both teams were playing for the right to advance. The boys won the game by playing hard and with great teamwork.  With only 8 teams left the competition became even tougher.  The boys played an undefeated team from Pierre Burton.  After going down 11-2 the boys stormed back. They answered with a 20-9 run to end the game, but the other team hit a basket to tie the game and send it to overtime.

After a back and forth 3 minutes, the boys fell short of the semi finals and lost the game by 1 point.  The hard work they put in and the way they supported each other made their coach proud.

Great season boys.  Congratulations on all that you have achieved.

Go Jaguars!

Our Voices Conference

Two of our grade seven students attended the, Our Voices Conference, on May 2.

The students were able to vote for the student trustees for York Region District School Board and they also listened to several very interesting presentations.

Our  students came away with many great ideas, reflected in the mind map above, to bring back to Johnsview Village Public School.

Attendance at JVPS

The Education Act states, “a pupil shall attend punctually and regularly”(Regulation 262, Section 23).

At Johnsview Village P.S. we emphasize the importance of good attendance and arriving at school on time to help students establish patterns for success, now and in the future. We have many students arriving late each day.

Students who arrive late disrupt classmates’ learning and risk missing essential instruction.

School begins promptly at 9:00 am and students are expected to be in their classes prepared and ready to learn.

If your child is late due to an appointment or unforeseen circumstance, please call the office prior to 8:45 am to report your child's absence (905-881-3360). Otherwise, please make any adjustments necessary to your morning routines to ensure your child arrives at school on time.

As well, if your child will be absent, please call the office BEFORE 8:45 am.  Only parents or guardians can call to report an absence. Students cannot report their own absence.  If your child is absent for more than 1 day in a row, parents or guardians need to call the office each day to report the absence.

We are looking forward to working together with parents/guardians to ensure that all of our students are arriving at school on time.
