Every Student Counts Survey

Student voice is important to us. From November 12 to December 14, 2018, the York Region District School Board will invite all students to participate in the Every Student Counts Survey (ESCS).
The purpose of this census survey is to better understand YRDSB’s diverse student population as well as students’ experiences in school and outside of school. The survey results will be used to help improve our schools and to:
  • Identify and eliminate systemic barriers to student success;
  • Create more equitable and inclusive school environments; and,
  • Improve student achievement and well-being.
All students will be given the opportunity to participate. Accessibility options will be available for any student who needs assistance completing the survey.
  • For students in Kindergarten to Grade 6, the survey will be sent home to be completed with a parent/guardian.
The Every Student Counts Survey (ESCS) is confidential but not anonymous. To ensure confidentiality, no directly identifying information (such as student name) will be on the survey. As one of the main purposes of the survey is to identify and eliminate systemic barriers to student success, all surveys will include a unique code that will be used to link the survey data with student achievement data.  Survey results will only be reported in aggregate form (grouped data only) and no individual students will be identified. A summary of the results will be available at schools and on this webpage in Spring 2019.

Parents of students in grades K to 6 can access the survey at the following address:
www.cci-survey.ca/York/kto6

An information paper was sent home to all families with the unique code for each child to complete the survey at home with parents. If you did not receive this paper with the unique code, please contact the school office and we will be happy to provide you with the code to complete the survey.

This is a friendly reminder for families with child(ren) in Kindergarten to Grade 6 to please complete the online survey at home with your child by November 30.  Earlier this month, you should have received a school letter with a link to the online survey. The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hebrew, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Tamil, Urdu and Vietnamese.
If you have misplaced your letter, please contact the school office.  If you have already completed the survey, please disregard this letter.
The ESCS is voluntary and confidential. Survey results will be used to help improve our schools and to:
● Identify and eliminate systemic barriers to student success;
● Create more equitable and inclusive school environments; and,
● Improve student achievement and well-being.
A summary of the results (grouped data only) will be available at schools and on the Board’s website in Spring 2019.
If you have any questions about the survey, please feel free to contact me. Additional information about the survey (i.e., FAQs and survey questions), is available at www.yrdsb.ca/escs.

Learning Commons Survey for Primary Students

We would like to invite our primary students and their parents to have a voice in shaping our new Learning Commons.  As you know we are transitioning from a traditional library into a more modern learning commons.  In our learning commons we hope to have:

  • spaces for students to gather
  • a refreshed primary area
  • a makerspace area
  • a greenscreen for making movies
  • more computers
  • up to date shelving
  • new books
Our students in grades 4 to 8 have already completed a survey in school and we would like to capture the voices and thoughts of our younger students.

Parents can work through the survey with each child and then submit the survey.  You can do one survey for each child you have at Johnsview Village who are currently in grades JK to 3.

We look forward to hearing from you.

The survey can be found at the link below:

Parent Engagement Survey

Thank you to all of the parents to date who have completed the parent engagement survey found on the blog.  To date we have 59 responses and we would be very pleased to have all parents respond to the survey.  If you are able, the survey is still open for parents who have yet to fill it out.  We would welcome your input as the results from the survey will guide our next steps. Please make sure you are only filling out the survey once.

So far, parents have indicated the following information:

  • Parents would be interested in coming to the school for a workshop on the education system
  • Parent would be interested in a workshop at the end of the school day
  • Parents would be interested in coming to the school for a family science night
  • Parents are interested in a paid lunch program with most parents choosing  "art" for the paid lunch program

Parent Survey

We are inviting all of our parents/guardians to please complete the survey mentioned in this blog. The purpose of this survey is to collect data that demonstrates consideration for programs/activities for students and parents to support student achievement and well being.

A review of this report by Administration and the Community Resource Facilitator will determine our next steps in terms of the types of supports, as they align with the School Improvement Plan that will be considered for the school community.

It is our hope that with school and parent community support and our collaborative partnerships with community organizations, we will be able to respond effectively to address the identified needs.

Please complete the survey only once and the survey is completely anonymous.

The survey can be found at this address:

We would greatly appreciate it, if all parents could complete the survey by March 31, 2016.
