Winter Carnival at JVPS

Getting to School on Time

Getting to class on time, and avoiding absences are critical if your child is to get the most out of school. What can you, as a parent, do to help ensure your child’s regular attendance?

The morning can be a very hectic time. Here are some effective tips for getting your child up and out the door on time:

 • Get your child to bed at a reasonable hour.

 • Set realistic and consistent schedules and rules at home. Getting ready for school should be part of the child’s overall routine; something that’s expected of him/her every day.

 • Do whatever is necessary the night before to save time in the morning, such as setting out clothes, packing lunches, and setting backpacks at the door.

 • Create a set morning routine that your child can easily follow (i.e. washing hands and face, going to the bathroom, dressing, making the bed, brushing teeth, and eating a healthy breakfast).

 • Avoid any distractions that can slow your child down, like TV, computers or games.

 • Set your alarm to get up earlier if you’re running late regularly.

It is also very important to call in to the school to inform the office if your child is going to be absent.

Safe Arrival Procedures

Safe Arrival Procedures

Parents, Please Call to Report Your Child’s Absence

To best ensure the safe arrival of all students we ask you to PLEASE NOTIFY THE SCHOOL IF A STUDENT IS GOING TO BE ABSENT OR LATE. This will save a phone call to your home or office. We have an answering service on at all times when the school is closed. If a child is going to be late or absent, or if a parent wishes their child to leave school prior to regular dismissal time, a note should be sent on the day BEFORE the absence whenever possible. If a student is not in school and his/her absence has not been explained by a note or telephone call, school office staff will take the following action:

- Call home.
- Call the parents at work.
- Call the emergency number listed on the student’s Emergency Form.
- Call the York Regional Police in accordance with our Safe Arrival Policy

Your help is required to make sure your children arrive on time before 8:55 a.m. and start
their day by entering the school only through their assigned door.

Beginning every morning at 8:45 a.m., students are supervised in the school yard by staff members.

Parents are encouraged to make sure that their children arrive at 8:45 a.m. in order to be on time when  the entry bell rings at 8:55 a.m.

Parents, please ensure the office has up-to-date contact information!

Three Questions to Ask Your Child

York Region District School Board School Climate Survey for Students

Students in Grades 5 to 12 at the York Region District School Board will be invited to participate in a survey between March 20 and April 28, 2017.  The survey is voluntary, anonymous and confidential, and will take place at school.

The YRDSB survey fulfills the Ontario Ministry of Education’s requirement for schools to conduct student surveys and is aligned with the YRDSB’s Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being. Survey questions will address topics related to Math, Modern Learning, Mental Health and Well-Being, Equity, and School Safety.

This survey provides an opportunity to hear directly from students and the results will be used to identify student needs and plan strategies to support student achievement and well-being. If you have questions, please contact the school office.

If you do not wish your child(ren) to participate in the survey, please contact the school by March 10, 2017.

Book Fair at JVPS

Dear Families,

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school from February 27th to March 3rd and you are invited to come and share in this celebration of literacy with us!

Don’t forget to visit the Classroom Wish List display when you visit the Fair. Take a moment to learn how purchasing books and donating them to your child’s classroom, or the library and how you can give readers even greater ACCESS to the books they want to read by expanding existing classroom libraries.

Visit the Scholastic Book Fairs website at www.scholastic.ca/bookfairs to read reviews of the Featured Books. You can also watch book trailers and author videos with your child on the BookTube page.

Next week your child will be bringing home a Book Fair flyer that provides a preview of only a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Fair. On February 27nd students will have the opportunity to preview the books and create their wish lists, which they will be sharing with you at home.

The flyer also contains a special ballot that parents can deposit for a draw. Your child can win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s classroom!

Don’t forget to mark the Book Fair dates (February 27th to March 3rd) on your calendar! The Book Fair will be open during morning and lunch recess and between 3:30 and 4 p.m. so that parents have an opportunity to visit. Parents, please don’t forget to check in with the office first.

At the Book Fair you will find books to purchase that will help to motivate more reading. With your involvement, we can inspire children to practice reading and read more often. Together, we can make a difference in their lives that will last a lifetime. Your support of this vital literary event is a key part of helping us obtain new books and resources for our library and classrooms.

We look forward to seeing you during our Scholastic Book Fair. Thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary event and our school.

Boys' Basketball News

Yesterday, Wednesday February 22, the Intermediate Boys' Basketball Team participated in the Area Qualifier Tournament.  The competition was fierce as all 5 teams brought a tough, physical, and competitive mindset.  The boys played extremely well during the round robin competition.  They lost a close game to Woodland by 4 points.  They beat Westminster and Thornhill.  And they lost a heartbreaker to undefeated Baythorn by 1 point and with only 1 second remaining in the game.

The boys' hopes were high as they entered the semi-finals against a tough team from Woodland.  The winner would be guaranteed 2nd place and would advance to the Area
Finals.  Although they played their best, it was not enough. The boys lost a close game to Woodland...officially ending their season.

The character, spirit, and determination that this team displayed yesterday was truly inspiring.  Through all of the ups and downs (and there were many), the boys kept fighting, kept trying, and always supported each other.

Congratulations on a fantastic season!

Go Jaguars!

Report Cards

On February 16, 2017 your child’s First Term Report Card will be sent home at the end of the day.

As you read your child’s Term 1 Report Card we hope that you receive a clear indication of your child’s strengths and areas of need.  We also would like you to help your child understand the next steps suggested for their continued growth and progress as we embark on Term 2.

The development of learning skills and work habits needed to succeed in school and in life begins early in a child’s schooling. As students move through the grades, they develop and then consolidate their learning skills and work habits in preparation for post-secondary education and the world of work.
In many subjects and disciplines in Grades 1 to 12, the development of the learning skills and work habits is further strengthened through the achievement of the curriculum expectations.
Teachers will work with students and their parents/guardians to help them develop the following six learning skills and work habits:
Responsibility
• Organization
• Independent Work
• Collaboration
• Initiative
• Self-Regulation
Strong learning skills and positive work habits are often an indicator of future success in school, at home, and in life in general.
Learning skills and work habits will look different in individuals as they grow and mature. Teachers will work together with students to develop the criteria used to assess learning skills and work habits. With a growth mindset and perseverance, which is a strong focus here at Johnsview Village P.S., we believe all students can succeed at their goals for improvement.

The purpose of the first term provincial report card is to communicate how well your child has achieved the overall curriculum expectations for each subject at the end of a period of learning (e.g., end of term 1).
Determining a Report Card Grade
Teachers will consider the quality of all evidence for evaluation that has been collected over time using a variety of methods. The teacher will consider:
• all assignments for evaluation and tests/exams that were completed or submitted;
• the number of assignments for evaluation and tests/exams that were not completed or submitted; and
• evidence of achievement that is available for each overall expectation for a subject.

Teachers will use their professional judgement to interpret the evidence and then will assign a letter grade or percentage mark.

The Ministry report cards include a tear-off section where your child is to write their goals for improvement and parents can include their comments as well.

If you have any questions, you may indicate your request to discuss your child’s report with the teacher on this form or call into the school.  As always, we thank you for your support to ensure that our students are putting forth their best effort to achieve success.

Basketball News

Last night, Thursday February 9, the Intermediate Boys' Basketball Team hosted German Mills P.S. German Mills  got off to a fast start by making quick cuts to the basket and scoring inside.  The Jaguars did not give up.  They fought back led by tenacious defense and shooting the ball from the outside.

Although the boys persevered and tried their best, they were not able to defeat the team from German Mills.

Despite losing 34  - 27, the boys played well and showed a lot of character.

Great job team!
