Tips for Getting to School on Time

We want to welcome everyone back after the long weekend and to remind parents/guardians that supervision starts at 8:45 a.m. in the yard.

Please see the above tips for ensuring that your child arrives at school on time.

Students enter the building right at 9:00 a.m. and we want to encourage all of our students to be on time on Tuesday, March 29 and for the rest of the school year.

Parent Survey

We are inviting all of our parents/guardians to please complete the survey mentioned in this blog. The purpose of this survey is to collect data that demonstrates consideration for programs/activities for students and parents to support student achievement and well being.

A review of this report by Administration and the Community Resource Facilitator will determine our next steps in terms of the types of supports, as they align with the School Improvement Plan that will be considered for the school community.

It is our hope that with school and parent community support and our collaborative partnerships with community organizations, we will be able to respond effectively to address the identified needs.

Please complete the survey only once and the survey is completely anonymous.

The survey can be found at this address:

We would greatly appreciate it, if all parents could complete the survey by March 31, 2016.

Modern Learning at Johnsview

At Johnsview Village Public School our students are thinking about modern learning and what it means to them. Some of our students created this bulletin board expressing their interpretation of modern learning.

In classrooms, to support modern learning, students are focusing on higher order thinking questions, the problem solving model in mathematics and using technology to upload assignments on to the google classroom.

The Importance of Regular School Attendance and Punctuality

We hope all of our families had a great March Break and are looking forward to the next term.

Did you know that regular attendance and punctuality are a strong indicator of school success?

Regular attendance and punctuality are a vital part of learning and are directly linked to student success.

Successful students attend school regularly.

Why Does Punctual Attendance Matter?

Getting to school – every day and on time – is very important. Learning occurs daily, right from the start of class. By establishing patterns early on (i.e. by being punctual and responsible) children acquire positive habits about school attendance.

Some other things to consider:

• If children are late arriving to school, they miss important social     time with their peers before school begins.
• Students who are late often feel embarrassed or self-conscious.
• Late arrivals disrupt the routine of the classroom.
• A last-minute rush can be stressful for the child, and get him/her     to school in the wrong frame of mind.
• Missing even five or ten minutes of the day can make it harder for   a student to understand the material being taught.
•Frequent absenteeism leads to gaps in a child’s skills and            knowledge base and can cause the child to fall behind peers and  decrease self-esteem.
•Too many missed school days can increase isolation as the child  stands out from his/her classmates and misses opportunities to  develop socially.
•Absenteeism makes it tougher for the child to develop a good  rapport with the teachers.

Tips for Getting to School On Time

The morning can be a very hectic time. Here are some effective tips for getting your child up and out the door on time:

•Get your child to bed at a reasonable hour.
•Set realistic and consistent schedules and rules at home. Getting    ready for school should be part of the child’s overall routine;  something that’s expected of him/her every day.
•Do whatever is necessary the night before to save time in the  morning, such as setting out clothes, packing lunches, and setting  backpacks at the door.
•Create a set morning routine that your child can easily follow (i.e.  washing hands and face, going to the bathroom, dressing, making  the bed, brushing teeth, and eating a healthy breakfast).
•Avoid any distractions that can slow your child down, like TV or  games.
•Set your alarm to get up earlier if you’re running late regularly

We are looking forward to the next part of the school year and to all of our students arriving on time at school from now on until the end of the school year.

School entry is at 8:55 A.M.

Please ensure that your child is on time each and every day.

Wishing our Johnsview Families a Happy Nawruz

It’s almost time for Nowruz, the most important holiday in the Iranian culture. Nowruz, meaning “New Day”, celebrates the coming of spring and the renewal of nature. This holiday marks the beginning of the Persian calendar and occurs every year at the exact moment that spring starts. This year, Nowruz will take place on Sunday March 20 at 12:30 a.m.

When Nowruz arrives, families gather and say, "Sal-e no mobarak," or “Happy New Year”!  It is tradition for the oldest member of the family to give gifts to the younger ones. Soon after, family and friends begin visiting each other’s homes to welcome the new year.

One of the most important Nowruz traditions is the, "Sofreh-e Haft Seen," a ceremonial table where all dishes begin with the Persian letter "S". The most iconic part of the table is the “sabze” or sprouts, which represent rebirth. Other dishes include “serke” or vinegar, which represents patience and "seeb" or apple, which symbolizes beauty and health.

Here at Johnsview Village P.S. would like to wish everyone celebrating this holiday a, “Happy Nowruz”!

“Ei-de shoma mobarak”!

Seeb (apple), Sabze (green grass), Serke (vinegar), Samanoo (sweet pudding made from wheat germ), Senjed (a kind of berry), Sekke (coin), and Seer (garlic). Other options are Somagh (sumak, an Iranian spice), Sombol (spring flower).

To complete the Sofreh, we also include: eggs, candles, mirror, etc…

Character Trait for March: Initiative

This month our students will be focusing on the character trait of “Initiative”.

The development of learning skills and work habits needed to succeed in school and in life begins early in a child’s schooling. As students move through the grades, they develop and then consolidate their learning skills and work habits in preparation for post-secondary education and the world of work.

Today we had an informative assembly where students watched a few scenarios to explain initiative and they heard a presentation from the grade 4/5 class about the definition of initiative.

Below are some examples of initiative.

Initiative

·acts upon new ideas and opportunities for learning;

· demonstrates a willingness to take risks;

· demonstrates curiosity and interest in learning;

· approaches new tasks with a positive attitude;

· and recognizes and advocates appropriately for the rights of self     and others.

All of us, teachers, students and parents/guardians will work together to set goals for developing  the learning skill of Initiative. The goals listed below can form a “to do list” or a “success criteria list” for our students to follow:

ü  I will take turns
ü  I will challenge myself to improve
ü  I will initiate play with others appropriately
ü  I will choose an activity independently
ü  I will make an effort to try
ü  I will include other in group work
ü  I will show an interest in learning
ü  I will show leadership in my group

At home, you can help to support your child’s growth in Initiative by giving them a task to complete that they may never have tried before, for example:

·    cooking a new recipe,
·    helping with a mechanical task
·    helping to plan out an activity for the family

and note whether her or she does so with a positive attitude and how innovative, curious and interested they are in the task given. Also pay attention to how well your child advocates for him/her self and for others over the March break.

A Successful Book Fair at Johnsview

Thank you to all of our parents who supported our most recent book fair at Johnsview Village P.S. This was one of our most successful book fairs yet.

We raised about 1200 dollars for our school from the book fair.

Again, thank you to all of our parents for your support and for sharing your love of reading with your children.

News from our Healthy Schools Committee

On Friday, February 26, 2016, Ms. Nayir and three student members of the Healthy Schools Committee attended a Healthy Schools Workshop.

First, the presenters introduced the activities in store for us and the order of which things were going to happen. We went on an active scavenger hunt where we got to know people from other schools. We were able to familiarize ourselves with the community centre, and were taught about how physical activity is not only good for you, but can also be really fun and a good form of team building.

Then, there was a breakout session, and the students and adults separated to their individual events. We went to a stress workshop, and learned the many ways to relieve stress, including blowing bubbles, listening to music, and “5 breaths” (breath around hand and fingers in an in/out pattern).

Overall, we experienced a variety of ways to stay healthy, which included not only eating healthy, but also being physically active and being mentally healthy. we also got a lot of ideas and we are excited about trying some of these ideas with the rest of the Committee back at Johnsview Village.

Modern Learning at Johnsview Village P.S.

Modern Learning is authentic, relevant, deep learning that enables learners to create, to connect, to communicate, to share their learning with the world and be ready for the future.

One of the goals for the York Region District School Board is to ensure that all our students are receiving the tools that they need to be ready for their future, through a focus on Modern Learning outlined in the graphic above through Vision, Mindsets, Deep Learning and Skills.

At Johnsview Village P.S. we are well on our way to providing this modern learning experience to our students through our approach on growth mindsets, our focus on math and the use of the problem solving model to engage our students in real life math problems and our use of technology to engage our learners.  Parents will be hearing more about Modern Learning throughout the year.

Inclement Weather Announcement

To Parents/Guardians,

In the event that buses are cancelled:

If buses are cancelled in the morning, they are also cancelled for the afternoon.

For safety reasons, you may choose whether or not to send your child to school; however, if you keep him/her home and your child is NOT bused, you MUST call the school and report the absence. Our Safe Arrival Program dictates that we know where all absent students are – if we cannot reach you, we will  contact your emergency contact person. If we cannot reach that person, we are obligated to contact the police.

There may be a modified program in your child’s class due to numbers of students attending and absences of some teachers. If your child does not attend school on a day that buses are cancelled due to inclement weather, your child will not face attendance related repercussions.

Once students arrive, they are expected to stay. You can, however, make arrangements ahead of time to pick up your child at lunch.
When buses are cancelled – there are:

·       NO Special Events days or field trips.
·       Please send a lunch with your child.

Please note:
Dress for the weather – bus cancellation does not mean automatic indoor recesses or early entry into the school.

Information regarding bus cancellations is posted at www.schoolbuscity.com, conveyed to GTA radio/television stations, and available on the Board’s Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/#!/YRDSB.

Thank you.
