EQAO Assessment Dates May 23 to June 5

For those parents with children in grades 3 and/or 6, please note that your child will be participating in the grade 3 and 6 standards-based assessment, known as EQAO.

This year students will be participating in the assessment between May 23rd to June 5th.

Please try and avoid booking family holidays and/or medical appointments during this time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school. As many parents and educators are aware, EQAO assessments are used in schools to plan for continuous student improvement in the areas of Literacy and Numeracy. The school based results assist in developing goals for improvement, namely by targeting areas in the curriculum which may require additional focus.

Reminder of New Parking Routines at JVPS

Dear Johnsview Village Families,

In our combined effort to keep our children safe and in being good neighbours with the Johnsview Village Co-op, we are asking for your continued support for the following changes in our drop-off and pick-up procedures at our school.  At the beginning of April, each family received a letter to ensure a safe environment for all of our students.  In that letter we outlined the new parking routines.  So far, the new routines are working very well and we would just like to remind all families who drive of the following routines:

Street Parking:
·       Please park in legal street parking spaces only
·       Please do not park on the north side of Porterfield
·       Please obey all street signs:  No U turns on Porterfield
·       Please do not leave your car running and unattended

·       Please do not park in spots reserved for residents of the
         Johnsview Village Co-op

Thank you for working with us to keep our students safe.

Sushi Lunch Information

Dear Parents,

Thank you very much for your Sushi order however, due to low participation we are unable to provide a Sushi lunch to your child at this time.  We are refunding all payments based on your method of payment  (cash, cheque or cash on line).

Again, thank you for your continued support!

Immunization Information for Parents

In the 2017/18 school year, York Region Public Health will visit all  elementary schools to provide school immunization clinics to Grade 7 students. The clinics offer vaccines for Hepatitis B, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Meningococcal A, C, Y, W-135 at no cost.

Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, meningococcal vaccine is required for school attendance, unless an exemption is filed with public health. Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines are recommended, but not required for school attendance.

Parents of students entering Grade 7 in fall 2017 will receive consent forms in the mail in June. Please complete the consent form and return it to York Region Public Health to allow your child to participate in the immunization clinics. Detailed instructions can be found on the forms and accompanying letter. If the consent form is not completed, your child will not be able to receive vaccines at the clinic.

Parents and guardians who do not consent should still complete the forms and return them, indicating that you do not authorize York Region Public Health to immunize your child.

Visit york.ca/immunizations and click on School Immunization Clinics for more information.

Did you know? If your child has missed a required vaccination on Ontario’s routine immunization schedule, he/she can receive the vaccine at one of York Region Public Health’s Community Immunization Clinics. These evening clinics are offered throughout the summer, giving students the opportunity to catch up before returning to school. Visit york.ca/immunizations and select Community Immunization Clinics to learn more.

YRDSB Survey for Parents/Guardians

We will be inviting parents/guardians  to participate in a survey May 1 - 19. This survey provides an important opportunity for parent/guardian voice. Results will be used to guide planning to support student achievement and well-being.

The English version of the survey will be available online. Paper surveys are available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Farsi, Korean and  Russian. Please contact the school to request a paper copy.

We value your input and encourage you to complete the survey. The information you provide will be anonymous, considered confidential and kept in strict accordance with all relevant legislation.  Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Information as to how to access the online survey will be sent home with students.

Thank you.

Planning for the New School Year

Much of the planning for the new school year is underway!
One of the most important tasks that usually begins in late May is the placement of students into new classes for September, 2017-2018.  Homeroom teachers in consultation with receiving teachers, appropriate support staff and school administration devote much discussion time to the generation of classes that strive to best meet the needs of all of our students.  Class placement is a complex process that takes many hours of thought and discussion.  Decisions are made following careful consideration of a number of criteria:

  • Balance of student abilities,
  • Ministry and Board Guidelines (e.g. class size)
  • Gender balance,
  • Academic performance
  • Learning skills
  • Individual needs
  • social/emotional factors
  • ELL and Special Education needs
While friendship issues can play a role in the comfort level of some students, at particular developmental stages, many friends learn best in separate classes.
Often parents have new and/or important information to share about their child which lends assistance to class placement decisions. Recent medical diagnoses, significant negative peer relationships that exist outside the school’s awareness or significant individual/family issues that may impact learning and learning style are items of information which are appreciated prior to the placement process. Parent input that is received via a letter to the Principal by Friday, MAY 12th, 2017 will be considered (and shared) during placement meetings.
Please note that we do not accept specific teacher requests.

Input after May 12th may not be considered due to the complexity of the task.  Please be advised that while such input is valued, it cannot drive class placement decisions since school-wide limitations and a variety of other factors will, at times, take precedence.

Final decisions regarding student placements remain the responsibility of the Principal. Ministry mandates on class size will impact class placements into September.  Please note that  we are unable to share class placement information with families until  the first day of the new school year.  Thank you in advance for your support and for partnering with us in this very important task.

Are You Planning On Moving?

In planning for next year’s classes, it is most helpful to know if your child/ren will be attending another school in September 2017 (high school not included).

If your child/ren will not be returning, please notify the office as soon as possible.

If your child currently attends Johnsview Village Public School and you have moved out of the school’s attendance area, please contact Mrs. Papi, at the school office. Mrs. Papi will advise you on how to make arrangements for your child’s September placement at his/her new school.

Thank you.

Math Resource Bags

Dear Families,

We would like to share a math resource bag with all of our JVPS families.  This resource bag went home with students on Monday April 3, 2017.  We are hoping that parents will use the resource bag to continue to help their children to inspire them and support them at home when engaged in math activities.  The resource bag was part of a take away for parents from our Parent Math Night on March 30.

Parent engagement matters. Study after study has shown us that student achievement improves when parents play an active role in their children’s education and that good schools become even better schools when parents are involved.

Again, we hope this math resource bag will provide useful suggestions for parents and that students will benefit from and enjoy studying mathematics.

Parent Math Night at JVPS

Our Parent Math Night was a great success.  Parents received many tips on how to work with their children at home to continue to inspire their children to love math.

Parents learned to:

  • establish consistent homework routines
  • engage their children in math talk about what the children learn in class
  • encourage their children to take risks and explain their problem-solving skills

For parents who attended the Math Night, if you have not already filled out the feedback survey for the Parent Math Night, please follow the link below to complete the survey.
